Brian Tracy in Nigeria tells ‘why some people are more successful than others’

…says every rung on the ladder of success is a new skill that is learnable

Brian Tracy, one of America’s leading authorities on the development of the human potential and personal effectiveness, on Sunday highlighted what makes the difference between highly successful individuals and others to an elated audience in Nigeria.

Speaking at Daystar Christian Centre in Lagos, the author of best-selling books including ‘Eat That Frog!’ and ‘Maximum Achievement’ said he was born into a poor family and had to set out on the quest as to why some people are more successful than others. In his determined bid to unravel the secrets, he read 66 books on the subject.

“They are more productive; they get more result and they make contribution to the world,” he said of people who are more successful. “If you want to get more from what you do, put more into it.”

On the ladder of success, he said, every rung is a new skill that will help you get more results. “You have more potential than you can use up in your lifetime. You can learn any skill,” he added.

With more skills, you get better, he said, adding that people who are more successful “keep getting better and climb the ladder of success.”

Tracy said the most important quality for success is focus. “If you can focus, you can achieve anything.”

Stating that technology is one of the greatest enemies of success today as it has huge capacity to distract, he said one of the greatest secret of success is to “leave things off; disconnect. Focus on the most important thing. You have to set priorities and focus on those things to get results.”

Task completion – starting and finishing a task – is another quality of people who are more successful than others. “All success comes from task completion,” he said.

Joy is as a result of doing something that improves your life, said Tracy. “Every time you complete a task it makes you happy.”

Successful people are those who have the habit of starting and completing a task, he said, even as he stressed the need to pray to God about one’s desires.

Speaking about the importance of clarity, he said: “If you are clear about what you want, you will start to attract all the resources and people you need to achieve it.”

Writing down goals also set successful people apart from others. “When you write down a goal with your hand, it will be programmed in your subconscious mind.” Quoting Henry Ford, he said any goal can be achieved if you break it down into small tasks.

“Be clear about what you want and focus on that one thing until you get result. What is your most important goal right now?” Tracy challenged the audience. “To achieve the goal you have not achieved before, you need a new skill. Ask yourself ‘which one skill we help me most to achieve my goal?’”

He added: “Be clear about your goals; be clear about the most important skills you need and be clear about the most important tasks that you can do to achieve your goals.”

Have You Given Up on Your Dreams?

By Dr Joe Rubino

Remember when we were kids… And every day was an adventure.  The grass was greener, the sky more blue, and the stars shown brighter.

And our futures went on forever – as far as the eye could see. There was no stopping us.  Go ahead, let ’em try!  We marched at each day break and conquered the world by nightfall. Life was full of endless possibilities…

Can you think back to those times and to your hopes and dreams for the future?

Astronaut, President, Football Hero, Rock Singer, Doctor, Baseball Legend, Famous Artist, Movie Star, Scientist…

How clear the path to each one…

Or maybe you only knew that you were destined for greatness.  But you were sure it was coming… Because that’s all it took.

Your unwavering belief in yourself.  Your absolute determination.  The certainty of youth.

Congratulate yourself if you reached those goals.  Find joy in having stayed the course. In being one of the very few.

Look back to where you started and know that you have done exactly what you intended… To know you are exactly where you want to be.

And it’s OK if you haven’t gotten there, you are not alone.  Most of us have yet to realize our full potential.  It’s not like they offer a class in achieving your dreams.

And really, it doesn’t matter where you have been… Or even where you’re at today.

The only things that matter are who you want to be and where you want to be.  Most likely, fulfilling those childhood dreams today would not hold the same joy.  Age blesses us with the understanding of what brings true happiness.

But you still have – within your heart and mind – a clear vision of who you want to be now…

Leader, Salesperson, Author, Partner, Executive, Speaker, Marketer, Coach, Better Parent, Effective Communicator, Mentor, Business Owner…

Whatever it is…  you can reach it…

STOP WAITING FOR GODOT!

By Femi Asu

Do you have to begin only in a BIG way? Who says you have to be ‘great’ before you set your ideas in motion? Why do you think you must have all it takes before you take a crack at your dream? How did Edmund Hillary reach the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain?  Are you waiting until when you can take a giant leap before you launch out on your elephantine dream? Or are you waiting for perfect conditions? I’m afraid, you are waiting for Godot!

Success is an evolution, not an overnight achievement; a journey, not a destination; an unending project, never a single, simple accomplishment that stands alone unrelated to the past and disconnected from the future. – Robert Schuller.

It is easy to think BIG; to have lofty dreams; to have giant goals, but success comes from daring to take small steps. All great things, says Peter Senge, have small beginnings. Little drops of water, little grains of sand, make the mighty ocean and the pleasant sand. Acorns from oaks grow. The biggest dog was once a puppy. A great flame begins as a little spark. Little wonder Bruce Barton said: “Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things…I am tempted to think…there are no little things.” It is true that success consists of a series of little daily efforts.

Many people want to do great things in life, but they don’t want to start small. They want to start in a big-time way. A lot of people have missed out in life refusing to take baby steps towards their dream – they are waiting for extraordinary opportunities to hit it big. How many great ideas have been scotched by people who kept postponing the pursuit of their ideas until a perfect time – when everything they need would be readily available to them?

He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying.

– Friedrich Nietzsche

If you really want to do great things, you must be willing and ready to start with small things and do them in a great way. All great things have their beginning in that which is small. Rome was not built in a day. Those who built it started small. The skyscrapers that you see today did not surface overnight; they were built by smithereens of efforts by committed and determined people. They simply did ordinary things in an extraordinary way.

Have confidence that if you have done a little thing well you can do a bigger thin well, too. – Storey

One of the necessary steps to greatness or success in life is to have a definite, clearly defined goal to pursue and then start with what you have with great determination to succeed, consistency, diligence and discipline.

For who has despised the days of small things?

– The Bible, Zechariah 4:10

Are you ready to take small steps towards the achievement of that giant idea, dream or goal? Stop waiting until you have all the necessary materials before you start. So long as you are determined, start small and work with whatever tools you have. As you go along, better tools will be found. If you advance in the direction of your dream, you will find resources from unexpected places and in people. You just have to start, however small it is. To paraphrase George Washington Carver, when you do small things in a great way, you will command the attention of the world. The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.

Start small; get your feet on the ground; make sure you’ve got your act together; make sure that you’ve got control and you know where you are going. Don’t start big; you’ll choke. Start small. “Inch by inch, anything’s a cinch”. – Robert Schuller

If you fail to start small, you may wake up one day to realise that your passion for the idea has vanished like morning dew in blazing sun. Procrastination is not only a thief of time, it steals ideas too. To be sure, those who are doing something great today did not wake up one day to find themselves doing those things; they consciously decided to start with what they had, where they were.

Start small; stop bemoaning or complaining about your lack of this or that. All that you need to set out on that idea is in your possession. Leverage on what you have now, and you will get more provision as you progress. People want to see what you are doing, not what you intend to do because intentions are cheap.

I repeat, you have what you need right now to start moving in the direction of your most-cherished dream. Start small, but don’t be stagnant; strive to expand and grow. Ultimately, you will stand out and reign – soaring high like eagles.  Edmund Hillary did not land on the summit of Everest; he took small steps without giving up however the challenges.

Do not wait; the time will never be just right. Start where you stand, and work with whatever   tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.                     – Napoleon Hill

In his book “Waiting for Godot”, Samuel Beckett tells about two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, who divert themselves while waiting expectantly, vainly for someone named Godot to arrive. To occupy the time, they eat, sleep, converse, sing, argue, play games, exercise, swap hats, and contemplate suicide. They wasted precious time waiting for Godot.

Perfect conditions, like  Godot, will never arrive.  Stop waiting. Waiting is a trap, and it is dangerous. There will always be reasons to wait. Wait until you have enough money? Wait until you have enough time? Wait until you have enough resources? Wait until you get enough approval from people? Not in the least. Start from where you are, with what you have and give it your very best. The sky is your limit. SOAR!

Nothing would be done at all if one waited until one could do it so well that no one could find fault with it. – Cardinal J. Newman
